- MV GRADIENT
- Powell River, B.C., Canada
- Is a 38 ft. diesel powered, 8 knot heavily laid up fiberglass displacement hull vessel built in 1980 to an Edwin Monk design as a west coast troller. Converted to a personal west coast exploration vehicle and day tour dive charter vessel in 2008-2009. GRADIENT operates on the North Sunshine Coast from her home port of Powell River. She moves between being based out of Powell River, Lund, Saltery Bay, Okeover Inlet and sometimes Pender Harbour. Gradient is a good stable dive platform with an easy to use custom dive ladder, large swim grid for cameras and gear, boom and lifting gear for 500 lb. and under ROV's and tech gear, that carries up to eight divers comfortably. Chemainus wreck and Iron Mines north
After a spectacular week the weather finally changed on us and rained the last day with Beat and Bill.
the vis is still poor under 70 at 15 feet although it is clearing in the sub 20 foot zone to almost 40.
im am posting a group of shots taken yesterday showing just a bit of the life we saw.
See if you can identify all of the marine life!
Great week guys. im looking forward to seeing and posting some of your shots topside and underwater.
Till next time.

Iron Mines with Bill and Beat
Back at the iron Mines again today.
We had 4 orca go by slow within 50 feet of anchored boat before we got in .
had a great view of a buffalo sculpin and then got buzzed hard by large female stellars.
It did not matter that the current was hi and the vis was mediocre.
I think we will have to do it again.

Diving with Beat Korner and Bill Golley
Wayne and I have been out diving for lasrt three days with Beat Korner , Bill Golley and a cameo appearance of Rob Devlin.
we dove a couople jumps a day on sites from Horace Head to Vivian island.
Best vis has been found around Iron Mines with about 30 - 40 ft when under 60 feet.
I finally felt competent enough to take along a camera with the rEvo.
heres a few macros from the dives

Gulf Stream wreck included in Wreck Trek.
One of my favorite local actual wrecks has finally been added to the Wreck Trek.
Thanks to Bill Coltart for work on getting the Gulfsream included and to April Bencze
for her great work on the ad below. I believe Passports are going to be available from the DIABC at participating dive shops for all of the wrecks and over the next couple of years anyone diving them will have their passport stamped after completing a dive on each particular wreck.
This is great for Powell River . Id love to see an artificial Reef or two here also to further complement the local diving, dive tourism and further enhance the circle route tour of wreck trek .
Another great weekend

Octopus City
Been away from posting for awhile now.
I did get out for a few splashes before , uring and after the holidays. I had the pleasure of meeting and diving with Jackie Hildering (aka the Marine detective).
i was just out the other day with my friend Pat who is recently certified and just getting into diving.
its great to see people keen to dive dive dive..
I sometimes post photos on my own Facebook page of Gradient dive or the Powell River Dive clubs Facebook page.
also about to take some rebreather training soon and getting excited about it.
Heres a few photos of Pat, some plumose anemones on a rope and a few of some hooded Nudibranchs i saw the other day.
In spite the name of the spot I did not see any octos but saw some signs.
